Each city throughout New Zealand has a major museum and many towns have their own local museums. New Zealand's museums look back on both Maori and European cultural heritage. You will also be able to find museums dedicated to things such as transport and war.

New Zealand is also an arts and crafts mecca with many art galleries spread around the country showing off the work of our talented artists.

Visit central Wellington's oldest identified building, which was built in 1858. Displays show the ways in which the first colonials blended their lives from their Victorian homeland with the dictates of a new country. Located within a few metres of the Kelburn stop of the Cable Car, you'll learn about the colourful 100-year history of this "relentless red machine". Recently expanded to meet the high visitation this museum now features as its central attraction the beautifully restored Grip No. 3 car c1905. You can also climb aboard one of the old cars or marvel at the machinery in the Winding Room.
